Ernie Dexter is a carpenter by trade, but an artist at heart.
To see Ernie’s paintings you would never know he was, in his words, “untrained”. A number of years ago he took a 10-week workshop with Dave Preston and then began to develop his own style.
Ernie is the definition of a humble artist considering his works grace many homes around Shelburne County and beyond. Just mention his name to someone local and they will nod and say, “Oh, yeah. Ernie’s paintings are beautiful!”
Ernie paints solely with oils. He has a dark, moody style; his preferred subjects are landscapes and old houses. “Anything with decay and neglect“, Ernie says with a smile. “The past is something we don’t really take the time to learn from.”
It should also be noted that Ernie makes his own frames from weathered wood which not only frames the artwork, but indeed is part of the artwork.
Ernie resides and paints in Shelburne, NS.
